Backstory of Insula School
Early Years
Early in the days of America, there was no Wizarding School. Wizarding parents would teach their children all they needed to know to survive, and any muggle-borns... well, sadly they were ingored. In 1800, at the age of sixty, an man named Brian Collins started the Salem Institute of Magic. The school was a quick success, and Collins accepted every budding witch or wizard - even Muggle-borns. That was not popular among the Purebloods, but since it was the only school in America there was not much that could be done.
It was widely known that another wizarding school was needed when people started to colonize the west coast. Muggles were also persecuting anyone who seemeed odd or strange. To escape them, wizards and witches on the west coast moved out to Catalina Island off the coast of California. They hid part of the island from the muggles, making it seem much smaller than it really was.
There they founded the all-wizarding area of Shoal Square. They also made three islands off the coast unplottable. Brian Collins' nephew and only living relative, a seventy five year old man named Cian O'Grady founded the Insula School of Magic. The school was placed on an island near Catalina, and used another nearby island for the flying pitch. It quickly became popular, known for some of it's fast-faced classes.
More Recent
Inusla is an eight year school. Students would recieve their letter in the summer, and they had to turn 10 on or before August 15th in order to attend the upcoming school year, giving time for buying supplies. Students would arrive at school on the first Sunday of September, with classes starting on the first Monday. The first years were given an easy year to adjust the school, and a seperate dorm. The second semester of the first year is devoted to finding out about all the clubs, the dorms, and eventually, choosing a dorm to stay in for the next seven years.
While Insula does seperate their students into dorms, it is worth nothing that, unlike their British counterpart, they do not have heavy i inter-dorm rivalry. Sure, they'll egg each other own during matches and games, but all in all, most do not care. Also unlike Hogwarts, the students only share a dorm with one other student... of course of the same gender. There is also a strict rule that one of the occupants of the dorms must actually state, "Yes, you can come in," and no guys are allowed in the girls dorms after curfew (which is 10:00 pm) and vise versa.
In 1995, Insula started a Track & Field field, with not only races, but various tests of racers agility. It was widely popular among the students. Next year, Salem Insitiute started it. In the 2008 - 2009 school year, Salem started inter-dorm Quidditch teams. It was popular among the students, so Insula is going to start their own inter-dorm Quidditch League in the upcoming school year.
Each dorm - and there are four, not including the first years dorm - has a Dorm Warden, one teacher who's responsibitity is to the students of that dorm. Also, two students - one boy, one girl - from each year in years five through eight are choosen as Residents, catering to the younger years if they need anything or get homesick.
Brian Collins stayed Dean of Salem Institute for ninety years, retiring the very year his nephew founded the sister school, and dying twenty years later of natural causes. Cian O'Grady stayed Dean for sixty years before retiring. He passed away in 1998, also of natural causes. In 2007, an exchange program with the Kotodama Institute of Magic in Japan was formed. It's now summer of 2009, and a new Dean has just recently been appointed after the former Dean retired.

Insula's Dorms
Omega Dorm - This is the first year's dorm, and is located in the center of the castle. Each year, two students from random houses are chosen as residents, and stay there to help the first years adjust. This is usually an eighth year, but it's not unusual to see it be a seventh or sixth year, though fifth year Omega Dorm residents are a little more rare. Though the school is located far from Hogwarts, it still finds a way to be similar. The first years choose their dorm at the end of their first year, and to keep things even, it's on a first come, first serve basis. Two students from years five through eight are chosen as residents for the remaining time they're in school. They help out the younger students if they need anything or are homesick. Sigma Kappa Tau - Mascot: Dragon
Alpha Theta Delta - Mascot: Stallion
Pi Lamda Zeta - Mascot: Eagle
Quotes are paraphrased from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Insula has two semesters, the first one that runs from September to the Christmas break. The second runs from when school resumes in January to the finals in beginning of June. During the last semester of their fourth year, they have a Career Day, where a representative from various careers will come to the school to talk to the students. At the end of fourth year, the students take the WAT (Wizarding Aptitude Test). This decides the classes that they will take for the next four years. At the end of their eighth and final year, they take the TACT (Terrifyingly Accurate Career Test) exams. It should also be noted that all four dorms take classes together.
Here's a brief introduction on some of the classes unique to Insula, or classes that have changed:
Introduction to Magic - A first semester class. It’s peer-taught, the student who teaches it being elected by the Student Body Government. It introduces the first years to the school, life as wizard, and answers various questions that they could possibly have. Flying - This class is required for the first semester, and is optional for the second. Astronomy - Due to low interest and budget cuts, this class was cancelled fifty years ago. Magical Medicine - This class combines spell work and potions directly related to healing.
Lunch is served every day from 11 am - 1 pm.
Year 1 Classes Introduction to Magic - MTWTF 8:30 am - 9:30 am History of Magic - MTWTF 10:00 am - 11:00 am Potions - MTWTF 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Flying - MTWTF 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Electives start in Year Two. Each student is required to take one semester of the following classes: Herbology, Transfiguration, Magical Medicine, and Care of Magical Creatures. They are one-semester classes. It is not required to take it in Year Two, but they must take them before the WAT exams at the end of Year Four. In Year Four, four more electives open. Each is one-semester classes, and students are required to take two semesters of any of the combinations (ie, one semester of Arithmancy and one semester of Muggle Studies). Here are the classes: Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Divination, Muggle Studies). At the end of their fourth year, each student meets with their Dorm Warden, who helps them decide what path they want to take and what classes they want to take for the next four years. The Dorm Warden will tell them whether or not – based on their current grades – if they will be able to get into the classes and, if necessary, what they need to do to get in. The students receive the results of the WAT exams – which they take at the end of their fourth year – during the summer. Provided they get the grade required to enter the class, everything goes as planned for Years Five through Eight, though it should be noted that some classes do overlap due to time constraints.
